Obituary for Stephen Eugene Spencer

To all of our family and friends.

It is with heavy hearts that we bring you news that Stephen Eugene Spencer passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 after a valiant struggle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Stephen was the son of proud supportive parents Eugene Morton Spencer and Marie Evaline Gay. He was born on Monday March 22, 1948 in Belleville Ontario. He was the loving, gentle husband of Shawnee (Craig) Spencer, whom he married on 22nd of May, 1971.

He was the very proud father of Morgan Craig Spencer (Laurie Richardson Spencer) of Picton and Matthew Aaron Spencer (Allison Humphries) of Toronto. He was the proud grandfather of two beautiful intelligent young ladies, Brooke and Drew Spencer of Picton, and two handsome witty young gentlemen, Forrest and Hugo Spencer of Toronto

Stephen is survived by his two sisters; Cynthia Guidinger (Ron) of Calgary, Alberta and Sandra Beninger (Tom Jacques) of Kingston, Ontario. Stephen is also survived by nieces and nephews on both sides of the family, of whom he was proud. He is survived by his mother-in-law Kay Craig, brother-in-law, David Craig (Elaine Gurney), sister-in-law Susan Craig (Brian Bustard) all of Brighton, and Sally Craig (Steve McDonald) of Mayne Island, B.C.
Stephen was the first born of this generation on both the Spencer and Gay sides of his family. His many first cousins looked up to him and have remained close.

Stephen was proud to be an educator in the elementary panel with the Northumberland Newcastle Board of Education and then the Kawartha Pine Ridge Board of Education at Percy Centennial Public School in Warkworth and Spring Valley Public School in Brighton. He was a dedicated teacher and many will remember him fondly. An early affectionate nickname of “Joe Cool” the Snoopy Mascot followed him for a number of years. At his desk, he was sometimes called Dad, Mom, Grandpa and once even Grandma.

Stephen spent a number of years working with Scouts Canada as President of Presqu’ile District, and was an active member of Smithfield Carman United Church.

Stephen was a gentle, gentleman and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
His cremated remains will eventually be interred at Carman Cemetery.

Our sincere appreciation goes out to the staff of the Malignant Hematology Day Unit at KGH for Stephen’s excellent care.

As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations to Canadian Blood Services, University Hospitals Kingston Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, Smithfield Carman United Church or a charity of your choice, would be appreciated by the family

Visitation will be held at Carman United Church on Saturday evening April 29th, from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

A Celebration of Life will take place at Carman United Church on Sunday, April 30, 2023 at 2:00PM.
